Beaches in Manzanillo

Manzanillo's pristine, unpopulated beaches are undeniably the most beautiful on the western coast of Mexico. Large and small, with majestic crashing waves or surf tranquil enough for children to play in, Manzanillohas it all.

Manzanillo, Mexico is made up of two separate bays, divided by the Peninsula of Santiago. On the left is the Bay of Santiago, followed by a smaller notched-out area, known as Playa Audiencia. On the right-hand side, is the Bay of Manzanillo. Both bays are more than five miles long.

PLAYA DE ORO

The waves are high with a strong undertow, and Playa de Oro is not recommended for swimming. The cliffs overlooking the sea are breathtaking, and are covered by several types of cactus. In one rock close to the sea there's a small cave where you'll find a family of bats, and there's plenty of scrap wood for a campfire.

PEÑA BLANCA

Another unpopulated beach is Peña Blanca, where Rancho Peña Blanca offers ATV adventures and Jeep tours to this once quiet haven. During various times of the year, the beach is closed so that the endangered turtles may lay their eggs. During that time the beach is protected by human volunteers and Mexican Navy personnel, who guard against poachers. The area got its name from the great rock pinnacle, visible from the beach, called Peña Blanca, or "White Rock," after the bird droppings that give it its color.

LA BOQUITA

The beaches of Santiago Bay stretch for 5 miles. At the northernmost point, where the lagoon empties into the sea, is a popular local’s beach, which is busy on weekends. Mild surf (no surf in the lagoon) is its main attractions, and the small, thatched-roof “armadas” serve excellent seafood.

SANTIAGO BAY

As you walk south from La Boquita, Bahia de Santiago takes on several other names for specific areas of beach. Miramar (View of the Sea), in front of Club Maeva, is marked by a pedestrian walkway over Highway 200. It is a good boogey boarding and surfing area, particularly at the Olas Altas section by Margaritas restaurant in front of the Hotel Vista Playa de Oro.

PLAYA SANTIAGO

At the very end of Santiago Bay is Santiago Beach, one of the oldest tourist sections of Manzanillo, with several inexpensive hotels. Usually the water is clear and calm, and the flavor of the area is typically Mexican.

AUDIENCIA BEACH

A charming, usually tranquil cove that divides both bays is Playa Audiencia. It was the original site of all the beach scenes from the movie "10," with Bo Derek and Dudley Moore. This beach has a variety of water sports. Free snorkeling and scuba lessons and trips area available through a local shop, Underworld Scuba, Jet skis, kayaks, boogie boards, inner tubes and banana boat rides are available on the beach. Both sides of Audiencia, near the rocks, are great for snorkeling and diving.

CLUB DE YATES

Club de Yates (Yacht Club Beach) is really called Playa Perla (Pearl Beach) on most local maps. Located on the left side of Playa La Audiencia, it offers a tiny bit of sand under a shade tree, and excellent snorkeling and diving. This is a very popular place for night dives because of the giant sleeping parrot fish in the shallows on the left side of the bay.

PLAYA LAS HADAS

Playa Las Hadas is a man-made beach on the south side of the Las Hadas marina, and officially starts Manzanillo Bay. It can only be accessed by Las Hadas guests, or guests of other hotels with Las Hadas privileges. It is normally a very calm beach, due to the construction of a jetty around the marina. Sailboats often anchor in the protected harbor just off the beach.

PLAYA DEL TESORO

"Treasure Beach" has changed recently, with the development of a new, 5-star hotel called the Karmina Palace and turning into a great beach to stop by.
